What Is a PDA Profile and How We Assess It
Learn how Twilight Psychology assesses the PDA profile within autism evaluations, including demand avoidance, masking, and differential diagnosis
Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a behavioural profile associated with the autism spectrum that is characterized by an intense, anxiety-driven need to avoid everyday demands and expectations.
Why PDA Is Frequently Overlooked
Many individuals with a PDA profile appear highly verbal and socially motivated, which can mask autistic traits in standard screening tools. Traditional ADOS-2 and ADI-R instruments may not capture the demand-avoidance dimension well, leading to missed or delayed diagnoses.
At Twilight Psychology, our evaluators are trained to:
- Recognize the behavioral and cognitive signatures of PDA
- Supplement standardized tools with clinical interview data
- Provide a formal diagnostic opinion that acknowledges the PDA profile
Our Assessment Process
- Intake interview — We gather developmental history with a specific focus on demand avoidance patterns across home, school, and social settings.
- Cognitive and adaptive testing — Standard measures supplemented with clinician observation.
- Collateral data — Parent and caregiver questionnaires designed to capture PDA-specific behaviors.
- Feedback session — We explain findings in plain language and discuss support strategies.
Why This Matters
A formal evaluation that identifies a PDA profile can open access to appropriate educational accommodations, therapeutic strategies, and, where applicable, disability support services.
If you believe you or your child may have a PDA profile, please visit our PDA Profile page for more information or contact our office to schedule an intake.
