Effective May 19, 2026, Twilight Psychology is no longer accepting CHAMPVA as the primary insurance for psychological testing services. This change applies immediately.

We will continue to accept CHAMPVA as secondary insurance, and we will continue accepting CHAMPVA for therapy and medication management.

What is changing

This update applies to psychological testing claims that rely on CHAMPVA as the primary payer, including the testing administration codes 96136 and 96137 discussed in our post on common CPT codes used in psychological testing.

We are making this change because CHAMPVA has not paid these psychological testing codes on a timely basis, and the administrative burden has become unsustainable for a small practice.

Why Twilight Psychology made this decision

Over time, our team has faced several recurring problems when trying to bill CHAMPVA for psychological testing:

  • Untimely non-payment of codes 96136 and 96137
  • No workable prior authorization link for providers when testing authorization is needed
  • Extensive administrative follow-up for claims that already require substantial staff time
  • Extensive documentation requirements that still often end in denial

As a practice, we cannot continue carrying the financial and administrative burden created by these requirements. We will cease to accept CHAMPVA as primary coverage for psychological testing.

What CHAMPVA clients can still use at Twilight

We will continue accepting CHAMPVA in these situations:

If you are seeking a psychological evaluation and CHAMPVA is your primary plan, please review our fees and insurance page for self-pay options and contact us before scheduling so we can help you review next steps.

We are sorry for the inconvenience

We know this change may be frustrating, especially for families who have been trying to access psychological testing through their benefits. We are sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding.
