Families looking for a child psychological evaluation in Lexington, Kentucky are often trying to answer more than one question at once. They may be wondering whether a child is showing signs of autism, ADHD, learning differences, emotional regulation challenges, developmental delays, or a more complex overlap that does not fit neatly into one category. At Twilight Psychology, our approach is to slow the process down enough to get the question right, then use comprehensive testing to build a more useful answer.

We currently offer child psychological evaluations with Heather Cornett, Emeli Evans, Ethan Puckett, and Taylor Pennington, depending on the child’s age, referral question, and clinical fit.

What families usually mean when they ask for a child psychological evaluation

Most parents are not actually searching for “testing” because they want a stack of scores. They are usually trying to understand why something feels harder than it should at home, at school, or in daily life.

A child psychological evaluation may help when a family is trying to clarify:

  • autism or other neurodevelopmental differences
  • ADHD concerns, especially when attention, impulsivity, or regulation issues are affecting functioning
  • learning differences such as dyslexia or broader academic concerns
  • emotional or behavioral patterns that need more than a brief screening
  • diagnostic questions that affect treatment planning, school support, or accommodations

At Twilight Psychology, these evaluations are designed to be comprehensive, not checkbox-based. That means we do not rely on one screener or one appointment alone when the referral question deserves more depth.

We evaluate children ages 2 and above

One of the most important practical questions for families is age. Twilight Psychology is able to evaluate children ages 2 and above when the referral question, developmental history, and clinician match are appropriate for formal assessment.

That matters because many families begin noticing concerns well before elementary school. Early questions about autism, developmental differences, sensory regulation, language, behavior, attention, or social communication do not always fit into a simple “wait and see” answer. A careful evaluation can help families understand whether a child needs monitoring, services, school planning, or a different next step altogether.

Which Twilight clinicians conduct child evaluations

Child evaluation referrals at Twilight Psychology may be matched with:

  • Heather Cornett, PhD for comprehensive psychological evaluations, including complex diagnostic clarification and evaluations beginning at age 2; holds a PSYPACT certificate for telehealth evaluations in 40+ states nationwide
  • Emeli Evans, M.S., LPA for neuro-affirming assessment work with children and adolescents, especially when autism, PDA-related questions, masking, or broader neurodivergent presentation may be part of the picture
  • Ethan Puckett, M.A., T-LPA for psychological and psychoeducational testing, especially for school-based questions involving learning, attention, autism, and broader emotional-behavioral concerns, with strongest fit typically in the 7 to 16 age range

The right fit depends on the referral concern, the child’s age, and the kind of recommendations a family needs at the end of the process. Starting July 6, 2026, Ethan also expands Twilight’s testing options for children and adolescents who may need a stronger school-based or psychoeducational lens.

What makes an evaluation comprehensive

When families search for a child psychologist, they are often trying to avoid a rushed process that ends with more confusion than clarity. A comprehensive evaluation typically includes a combination of:

  • parent or caregiver interview and developmental history
  • direct testing and age-appropriate standardized measures
  • rating scales or collateral information when relevant
  • careful review of school, medical, or therapy context when available
  • a feedback process that explains the findings in plain language
  • written recommendations that families can actually use

Not every child needs the same battery. Comprehensive does not mean every possible test. It means the evaluation is tailored to the question being asked and detailed enough to support real decision-making.

We keep the waitlist short when possible

Families often reach out after spending months on other waitlists, so timeline matters. Twilight Psychology is known for shorter wait times than many practices in the region.

For evaluations offered on a self-pay basis, families can often be scheduled within about 3 weeks, with reports frequently completed within 7 days of the intake and testing process. Insurance-based timelines can be longer because benefits review, prior authorization, and medical-necessity criteria affect scheduling, and insurance-approved testing hours must also cover records review, collateral information, interviews, scoring, interpretation, consultation, and documentation.

If you want the latest timeline information, our waitlist page explains how availability works.

We accept most insurances for covered evaluations

Families sometimes assume psychological testing will automatically be self-pay. That is not always the case here.

Twilight Psychology accepts most major insurance plans for covered evaluations, including many commercial plans, Kentucky Medicaid plans, and Medicare. Coverage depends on the referral question, your specific benefits, and whether the evaluation meets the plan’s medical-necessity rules. Insurance typically limits the number of testing units approved, so we focus on the most clinically relevant measures within those hours. If a referral is primarily school-focused, accommodation-focused, or needs a broader battery or more documentation than a plan allows, self-pay may be the better fit. Medicaid clients cannot be charged beyond covered amounts, so Medicaid evaluations are limited to approved hours.

If insurance is part of your decision-making, review our accepted insurances page and our FAQ for testing and prior-authorization details.

Two important diagnostic guardrails for child evaluations

Families are often trying to understand whether a child “has ADHD” or whether a long-standing pattern might point toward a personality issue. Those are reasonable questions, but the timing matters.

First, ADHD is usually not diagnosable for children below age 5. Preschool development varies widely, and many very young children show attention, activity, impulsivity, or regulation patterns that need monitoring without supporting a formal ADHD diagnosis yet. In younger children, the better question is often what the current pattern looks like developmentally and what support is needed now.

Second, personality disorders are not diagnosable for children below age 18 in our child evaluation process. For younger clients, the focus is on developmental history, emotional functioning, trauma context, relationships, coping patterns, and the supports that may help, rather than assigning an adult personality label too early.

Those guardrails do not make an evaluation less useful. They make it more accurate.

Why families pursue evaluation before things escalate

The best child evaluations are not only about diagnosis. They are about clarity before a child spends years being misunderstood.

Families often pursue testing because they want:

  • a more accurate understanding of strengths and struggles
  • guidance for therapy, school supports, or further services
  • help distinguishing autism, ADHD, learning issues, anxiety, trauma, or overlapping concerns
  • a clear report they can use in conversations with schools, pediatricians, and other providers

That is why a strong evaluation should end with recommendations, not just conclusions.
