Psychological testing is a series of paper-based or computer-based assessments administered to clients (and depending on age and presenting problem, possibly parents and teachers). These are typically completed in one sitting of 3-4 hours of time and assess for factors such as cognitive functioning, executive functioning, adaptive functioning, behavior, psychopathology, and/or personality. Learning assessments may take 5-6 hours to complete, and assess for cognitive functioning as well as academic achievement.
Psychological testing can be helpful when a clinician is unsure of a diagnosis or needs certain assessments performed to make a diagnosis (e.g., IQ testing for cognitive functioning). Testing can also be useful for clarifying a diagnosis if symptoms are unclear or a client has not responded to treatment. Lastly, some programs and providers require that psychological testing be completed in order to receive services (e.g., stimulant medication, autism services, IEP).
Choosing Twilight Psychology might be helpful if you believe you are in one or more of the following groups.
Are you overwhelmed and frustrated by the long waitlists for testing?
Do you want to get an official diagnosis rather than a report that is not accepted by various agencies?

Alternatively, did you have to mask your behaviors and feelings to fit in the society?

Do you think you might have more than just Autism or ADHD, such as depression, OCD, Borderline Personality, Bipolar Disorder?
Do you have Kentucky Medicaid but are told that your insurance is not accepted?
You might be having PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) profile of autism and would like therapy ?

Psychological testing is a tool to assist with diagnosis and treatment. It is not a miracle cure and will not solve all of your problems. However, it may provide guidance for your treatment. Results may not match the initial impressions by an individual or provider, so individuals should be prepared and open to findings discussed in the feedback session.
Twilight Psychology is located in Lexington, Kentucky but participates in Psypact, which allows me to practice in most states remotely. For a list of states that participate in Psypact, please visit https://psypact.org/mpage/psypactmap.
A timeline for psychological testing is often constrained by Prior Authorization approval from health insurance providers. Self-pay is typically faster and can be completed much quicker. What testing looks like can vary according to the needs of the client. However, here is an example timeline for Autism testing:
Meet for initial intake session to gather background information, including medical and developmental history. Previous medical, psychiatric, and/or educational records will be requested.
Meet for a follow-up session (if needed) to gather additional background information and/or complete brief psychological screeners.
Request pre-authorization from insurance (allow 1-2 weeks typically).
Schedule testing for a 3-4 hour block of time. A deposit is required at this point to secure your appointment (this does not apply for Medicaid clients) (see Fees/Insurance for more information).
Meet for the actual testing session (via telehealth or in-person).
The results of testing will be scored and interpreted by the clinicians, and written in a detailed report. Any remaining fees are required prior to this appointment (see Fees/Insurance for more information).
Meet for a feedback session 2-3 weeks later to discuss the results of testing, recommendations, and questions.
The entire process can be lengthy (6 to 9 hours) and take several weeks accounting for the long waitlists.
If you are a self-pay client requesting an online adult Autism or ADHD diagnosis, Twilight Psychology is frequently able to complete the intake(s), assessment, and feedback sessions within a week.
The initial intake session(s) and feedback session will be billed separately from testing. Co-pays for these sessions (if applicable) will be due the day of the appointment. Testing costs are dependent on the insurance plan. Please contact your insurance provider for exact costs. If insurance determines that the testing costs go towards the deductible, the client is responsible for paying the costs before the feedback session.
Please be aware that some insurance providers/plans no longer cover tele-assessment. Thus, while insurance may pay for your intake session via telehealth, they may not pay for the actual testing, unless you are tested in-person. You should confirm your benefits prior to your appointment. If your claim is denied, you will be responsible for the full self-pay amount.
The prices are the same as self-pay rates. I can provide a superbill that you can can submit to your insurer for reimbursement. For estimated costs with insurance or details about your coverage, please contact your insurance provider directly.

Generally, no. Commercial health insurance plans view learning disability assessments as educational assessments, which are explicitly excluded in their benefits. To learn more about your benefits, please contact your insurance company. The Kentucky school system is often required to conduct the IEP assessments. https://www.education.ky.gov/specialed/excep/GuidanceResources/Documents/SLD_QandA.pdf. You may request an independent education evaluation to be paid for by the school but you must contact your school to determine if they will cover this.
To ease the financial burden, at Twilight Psychology, services such as testing for other concerns e.g. autism, ADHD testing, are billed toward insurance. An additional hourly rate (approximately 3 hours) will be charged for time administering, scoring, and interpreting the learning disability assessments.
