Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition where brain processes information differently. It is not a mental illness, and it is characterized by differences in social communication, along with restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. These conditions can show up differently, especially in girls and women, or in individuals who have learned to "mask," or hide their autistic traits. Because of this, autistic individuals sometimes report feeling unheard or dismissed. Since Autism is not treated with medication or hospitalization, these ongoing struggles can remain unresolved for a long time without appropriate support.
We are still studying about what causes Autism, but most medical professionals and Epidemiologists agree it results from a combination of genetic- and environmental factors. For instance, a genetic change called Fragile X Syndrome can be a contributing factor. Another contributing factor could be the age of the father. Studies show that 1 in 31 American children are now diagnosed with Autism. It is more common for boys to receive an autism diagnosis than girls as a child. The presence of genetic factors suggests that Autism might be hereditary. If one child in a family is autistic, there is a higher chance that their siblings might also be autistic.
Early identification and intervention are supported by empirical evidence as critical factors in optimizing childhood behavioral outcomes and later quality of life.

Despite Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) being used widely to diagnose autism, it should not be the only test administered to clients. The ADOS-2 often does not identify those who are high-masking or lower support needs. Therefore, other measures may be more appropriate. In addition, a comprehensive assessment not only assesses for autism, but also cognitive, executive, and adaptive functioning. Without these components, testing is incomplete, missing critical treatment planning elements.
Twilight Psychology provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for autism for clients ages two and above. Our clinicians are experienced in administering and interpreting both the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) and the Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum, Second Edition (MIGDAS-2). We also conduct measure of cognitive functioning, executive functioning, adaptive functioning, and more depending on the presenting concern. We also provide a comprehensive report with recommendations.
